How to Keep Your House Cool in Maputo Without AC: Bioclimatic Design & Natural Ventilation

You can keep a house cool in Maputo’s hot, humid climate — and cut your air-conditioning bill — by designing with the climate instead of against it. The five most effective strategies are cross ventilation, shading, correct orientation, natural lighting, and using vegetation for shade and cooling. Of these, natural cross ventilation gives the biggest everyday comfort gain. These decisions cost the most to change later, so they belong at the design stage, not after the house is built.

Why this matters in Maputo

Maputo is hot for much of the year and humid near the coast. A house that traps heat forces you to run air conditioning constantly — expensive to install, expensive to run, and dependent on stable power. Bioclimatic design reduces that dependence by shaping the building so it stays cooler on its own. It is not a luxury add-on; it is a set of design choices that mostly cost little if planned early.

The five strategies

1. Cross ventilation

Place openings on opposite or adjacent walls so air moves through rooms rather than sitting still. A room with a window on only one wall barely ventilates; the same room with openings on two sides lets prevailing breezes carry heat and humidity out. This is the single highest-impact strategy in a hot, humid climate.

2. Shading (brise-soleil, overhangs, verandas)

Sunlight hitting glass and walls is what heats a house. Roof overhangs, verandas, shutters and brise-soleil keep direct sun off windows during the hottest hours while still letting daylight in. Shading the west face — which takes the harsh afternoon sun — matters most.

3. Orientation

How the house is turned on the plot decides how much sun each face receives and whether it catches the prevailing breeze. Getting orientation right costs nothing extra at design stage and pays off every day the house stands.

4. Natural lighting

Daylighting reduces the need for artificial light and the heat that lights add. Well-placed, shaded openings and lighter interior finishes spread daylight deeper into rooms without turning them into greenhouses.

5. Vegetation for shade and cooling

Trees and planting on the sun-exposed sides shade walls and windows and cool the air around the house through evapotranspiration. Landscape is part of the thermal design, not decoration added at the end.
